Worldwide Challenge gradings
B. MODERATE
Grade B treks generally last 2 or 3 days with walking times of 4 to 7 hours. The trek may involve ascents to higher altitudes and the occasional longer or more difficult day. You should be in good health and be reasonably fit through regular exercise with experience of hill and mountain walking at home.
C. STRENUOUS
Grade C treks are extended mountain walks lasting up to 5 days, often at altitude and with sustained ascents and descents. You will most likely be camping and/or staying overnight in mountain huts. There will be full support from local staff but all on the trek will carry a day pack whilst walking (5 – 10kg). Walking days usually involve 6 to 8 hours on the trail and possibly longer when crossing high altitude passes. Climate and remoteness may also play a part. Previous trekking experience is not essential but you must have a good level of walking fitness and you may well have to improve yours before the trek.
D. TOUGH
Grade D treks are often extended mountain walks over a range of wilderness terrain for up to 6 days. Expect to be walking at altitude over scree, snow and steep mountain paths for up to 6 days. Daily walking times are between 6 and 8 hours and you’ll be carrying a day pack (approx 10kgs). Extremes of weather can affect the going and crampons may be required. Stamina is of the utmost importance and we recommend previous trekking experience and complete confidence in your physical condition.
…and finally
In general, it is your motivation and determination that gets you to your goal. So even if you have never trekked before, a positive attitude backed up by physical preparation will see you to the top.
