Charitable Foundations & Trusts
CancerBACUP receives funds from many national and regional grantmakers to provide accurate, up to date and easy to understand cancer information, free of charge to people throughout the UK.
Every year our cancer information nurses respond to an increasing number of enquiries. The autumn 2002 opening of our second call centre in Glasgow gave us the capacity to handle an additional 18,000 Helpline calls each year, an increase which has been sustained by generous grants from a number of Trusts. Over the past 12 months the nurses dealt with almost 60,000 requests for information, practical advice and emotional support.
In July 2003, we launched Cancer In Your Language – a freephone service offering cancer information via interpreters in over 100 languages, including dedicated phone numbers for the 12 most commonly spoken languages among the UK’s Black and Minority Ethnic communities. This initiative was funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
Our award winning website now carries over 4,500 pages of up to date cancer information, and attracts over 200,000 unique users a month from all over the world. Generous support from GlaxoSmithKline enabled us to maintain and develop this increasingly important resource.
Trusts and Charitable Foundations provide the financial bedrock upon which our work is built. The grants we receive not only help us to meet the day to day cost of delivering our services but also to plan ahead and to innovate. For example, a donation from the Worshipful Company of Cooks allowed us to publish a new booklet on preparing appropriate, nutritious food for those diagnosed with cancer.
All donors are welcome to visit either our London or Glasgow offices, which house the freephone helpline, or one of our network of local drop-in centres to see at first hand the essential work carried out by our dedicated cancer nurses. By working in partnership with our supporters, we can ensure that CancerBACUP will continue to provide its comprehensive and essential services for people affected by cancer.
