Online risk assessment
People sometimes think that several cases of cancer in their family might be connected and that they have inherited an increased cancer risk. In fact, only a small minority (5-10%, or less than 10 out of 100 cases) of cancers are clearly linked to an inherited gene change. Assessing the possibility of inheriting a cancer gene is usually carried out at a consultation with a general practitioner, genetics specialist or counsellor but it is now possible for a computer programme to do this for some cancers.
CancerBACUP would like to be able to provide such a programme online. As always, CancerBACUP is keen to work closely with its users throughout the development of this initiative in order to ensure the best service for users.
Our online survey is now completed – thank you to everyone who took the time to fill it in. People who offered to volunteer will be contacted at a later stage in the project.
