Your events
Thank you to everybody who has helped to raise funds for CancerBACUP through their own fundraising. As a charity, we rely heavily on donations from individuals and without your dedication and commitment, we would not achieve nearly as much as we do. We really do value and appreciate the time and commitment that you give to us, every contribution really makes a difference ….
2 Ride the World
Simon & Lisa’s great adventure
In May 2003 Simon and Lisa made a decision that would change their lives forever… they were going to travel the world. What made their decision so special was that they were travelling not by plane, but by motorcycle!
In 1999 Simon’s mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and received support from CancerBACUP, and now Simon and Lisa have been raising funds for us since their departure. To date they have travelled across 41 countries, and where possible, visiting local cancer centres to give talks. They have a web page to record every step of their adventure, which also includes many great photos. To visit the site and support Simon and Lisa’s fundraising go to www.2ridetheworld.com
CancerBACUP would like to say a huge thank you to Simon and Lisa and wish them luck with breaking the Guinness World Record for the most countries travelled by bike.

Canoe Polo Cancer Challenge World Record
Ruth Holdway, David Hepworth and Matt Deaves organised a 24 hour canoe polo game which set a new world record for the longest match and the greatest number of players. There were two teams of 5 players with rolling substitutions so that the game didn’t stop. 220 players from York University Athletic Union and Canoe Club as well as from as far a field as Portsmouth and Aberdeen took part at Hatfield Water Park in Yorkshire.
Ruth, chairperson of the Cancer Challenge said “I am absolutely thrilled that the event was so successful… Cancer is a very scary word and no-one expects to be diagnosed with it at 23. I think this event has raised awareness that cancer can strike anyone at any time. However it has also proved that cancer is not necessarily the end of the line.!
www.cancerchallenge.org.uk has more details on the event.
John and Richard Bell Pennines Challenge
John and Richard spent a night exposed on the Northern Pennines to raise £228 for CancerBACUP. We did manage to construct a shelter from a sheet of polythene and the weather although damp was not unkind to us, unfortunately a plague of biting insects descended upon us instead! In the end we were praying for rain.”
